VDOT Begins Utility Relocation in Gainesville

First Step in Major Road Improvements

In early August, the Virginia Department of Transportation will begin moving utilities on Route 55 (John Marshall Highway) as part of the $195 million I-66/Rt. 29/Linton Hall Road improvement project in Prince William County. Actual road construction will begin in 2011 and be completed in 2014.

The two-year utility relocation and building demolition phase precedes the four-year construction project scheduled to begin in spring 2011 that will:

  • elevate Linton Hall Road over Route 29;
  • elevate Route 29 over the railroad tracks;
  • construct bridges over Gallerher Road  and the railroad tracks at Route 29;
  • add a lane on Route 29 from I-66 to Virginia Oaks Drive; and,
  • build new ramps to facilitate traffic movements at Route 29 and Linton Hall Road intersection.

Utility work will be on the north side of Route 55 from the intersection of Route 29 to Gallerher Road. VDOT is building a duct bank to house Verizon, MCI and Quest Communications lines. In addition, Columbia Gas is installing a new gas line adjacent to the duct bank.

Motorists can expect occasional lane closures associated with the utility relocation work along Route 55 during the week from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., but not along Route 29 during this phase. Updates will be provided as work progresses. In September, Dominion Power is scheduled to relocate electric lines along Route 55.

Originally construction was scheduled to begin in 2013, but under direction of Governor Kaine, the timeframe was pushed up to 2010 by phasing in property acquisition and utility relocation.
