Youth in Government Program

Have you ever wanted to improve something locally? Maybe you see the need for sidewalks, a dog park, or more visible signs to find businesses. Maybe you're driven to assist the homeless or just generally want to make a difference. Understanding how your local government operates can be key to making a positive impact. The Youth in Government Program was created to help local students develop mature citizenship and gain insight into how decisions are made at the town/city government level.

In the fall of 2023, the Town of Haymarket launched its first Youth in Government Program aiming to provide local youth with opportunities to voice their opinions. Following the program's success and valuable feedback, the Town and Town Council have decided to continue the program to give local youth a role in decision-making on community issues.

This season will challenge our participants in a new way. As you know, the Town of Haymarket and the surrounding community have experienced significant growth. With more homes come more students, and the Town of Haymarket received proffer monies to spend on the schools that serve our community. Our participants will be tasked with assessing school needs, debating, researching, and voting on where to spend the proffer monies. While our participants' votes will not result in a large check being printed for local schools, they will provide insight for the Town Council to consider when addressing proffer expenditures soon. Our participants' voices will have a real impact, and we are thrilled for them to have this opportunity.

Thank you, local middle schoolers, for applying and showing your interest in the Youth in Government program. We are looking forward to working with you this season.
