Thoroughfare Faces Change
"The earliest references to the settlement that became Thoroughfare date back to the late 1820, when the gap in the Bull Run Mountains west of Haymarket was known as "The Thoroughfare".
The Town of Haymarket was not the only small rural village in the early 1800's. Thoroughfare, just a short distance down Route 55, was home to a small community that dates back to 1820. The community grew over the years with a residential population of about 200, several general stores and even a school.
